My studio and home for the last twenty years has been in Rhoscolyn on the South Western edge of Ynys Cybi, Holy Island and Ynys Mon, Anglesey. This windswept and wild area has become the focus of my work although I still like to paint other parts of the island and mainland, especially the mountains of Eryri, Snowdonia. I have been lucky enough to make a living out of something I love, in an area that I love, and when people connect to my work and to the place, it makes it a very satisfying end to the creative process. I sell original paintings, prints and cards directly from the studio, as well as online.
Mae fy nghartref a stiwdio yn Rhoscolyn ar gornel de orllewinol Ynys Cybi. Mae'r ardal yn ganolig i fy ngwaith one dwi hefyd yn hoff o bentio rhannau eraill o Fon a Gogledd Cymru yn enwedig y mynyddoedd. Dwi'n ffodus i fedru gwneud bywoliaeth allan o rywbeth dwi'n caru, a pan mae bobol yn cysylltu hefo'r gwaith a'r tirlun mae'n ganlyniad boddhaol i'r broses creuadigol. Dwi'n gwerthu peintiadau, argraffiadau, dyluniadau a cardiau o'r stiwdio ac ar y we.
My working process is based on drawings and paintings done on location. These can be a quick sketch in pencil or more substantial drawing or painting in gouache, watercolour, acrylic, pastel or mixed media. They attempt to convey an impression of the scene, the light, tone, colour, texture and atmosphere. There is excitement and drama in the varying light and weather.
Mae fy mhroses creuadigol yn seiliedig ar ddylunio yn y man a'r lle. Gall rhain fod yn fraslun brysiog wrth i'r golau neu'r llanw newid neu gwaith mwy ystyrlon mewn gouache, acrylic neu sialc. Mae y a gynnwrf a drama yn yr amrywiaeth o olau a tywydd a'r ymgais i gyfleu'r golygfa drwy linell, ton, lliw, gweuad ac awyrgylch.
You are aware of things going on in the edges of your vision even when you are immersed in the scene and in its depiction. I’m interested in how one colour varies then blends into another, and how moving one or more elements can enhance the composition and clarity in the meaning of the work. I also take photos which can help with the final piece.
Rwy'n ymwybodol o bethau'n mynd ymlaen ar yr ymylon wrth ganolbwyntio ar y tirlun o'mlaen. Dwi'n ymddiddori yn sut mae lliwiau yn gweu i mewn i'w gilydd ac yn gweddu neu gyferbynnu a sut mae newid un elfen yn effeithio'r cyfansoddiad ac eglurdeb y gwaith.
Back in the studio I may work on the initial artwork, being careful not to over refine it or to lose the interest of hurried brushwork or mark-making. I may then start a painting in oils or acrylics, attempting to make a successful statement while retaining some of the initial freshness and dynamism.
Yn y stiwdio nai ddatblygu'r syniad gwreiddiol gan ymgeisio cadw'r marciau a gwaith brwsh mynegianol. Os wnai lun arall mewn olew neu acrylic ceisiaf gadw'r mynegiant gwreiddiol yn fyw.
People frequently ask how long a painting has taken and it’s a difficult question to answer. I may work continuously and finish it in one session, or I may have a series of short periods due to other commitments. Sometimes they may take weeks to resolve but are not always better than one created quickly from a strong impulse.
Mae pobl yn aml yn gofyn faint o amser mae peintiad yn cymeryd. Gall ddod at ei gilydd yn eithaf cyflum. Weithiau meant yn cymeryd wythnosau o ymdrech an ail weithio, weithiau mae'r gwaith gorau'n eithaf rhwydd.
I feel that the best work conveys feeling through paint, colours work together and the eye travels around the composition finding interest in line, shape, marks and patterns. There are sometimes abstract elements where the negative space is emphasised and colours have developed from the process.
Dwi’n teimlo fod y gwaith gorau yn cyfleu teimladau drwy baent, hefo'r lliwiau yn gweddu a'r llygad yn symud o gwmpas y cyfansoddiad ac yn ffeindio diddordeb mewn llinellau, siapiau,
marciau a patrymau. Mae yna elfennau haniaethol lle mae'r siapiau negyddol yn cael eu peysleisio a'r lliwiau yn datblygu drwy'r broses.
